Fireworks and community schemes: An insurance perspective

When I was a boy, fireworks were a thrill—exciting and fun! Even back in the 1970s, cities had designated areas for safely enjoying fireworks, especially on Guy Fawkes Night. Fireworks have since become a big part of New Year’s, Diwali, and other celebrations.

But there’s a flip side. Many serious injuries, particularly to children, and fires causing damage to buildings have been reported over the years. After all, where do those hot, glowing rockets land once they’ve lit up the sky?

The risk is even greater in densely populated areas, especially informal settlements, where makeshift homes are vulnerable to the spread of fire. In South Africa, city authorities often report fires on festive nights, leading local governments to set up “safe zones” for bonfires and fireworks to reduce the danger.

Here are some important safety tips:

Follow municipal bylaws and scheme rules

Always comply with the rules set by your municipality or homeowners’ association (HOA) to ensure everyone’s safety.

Have water and fire-extinguishing resources ready

Keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby. This can help prevent small fires from spreading.

Use designated or open spaces

Light fireworks in open areas, away from buildings and dry brush. Be extra careful when it’s windy—windy nights in Cape Town are almost a tradition!

Dispose of used fireworks properly

Soak them in water before discarding them. Watch out for leftover fireworks and handle them the same way.

Don’t reignite fireworks that fail to go off

Attempting to relight a dud is a common cause of injury.

In community living schemes, fireworks can land on roofs, smoulder, and ignite fires. I’ve seen this happen—once a rocket landed on a roof, rolled into the gutter, and set dry leaves alight in the wind.

We don’t want unnecessary injuries in our communities, especially on nights of celebration. Don’t forget about your pets either—keep them indoors, as fireworks can cause stress. Even inside, pets can injure themselves trying to escape by biting doors or breaking windows.

Enjoy the festivities, but let’s do so responsibly!
